Enjoying God

Hello Friends,

Confession: I am not a big music person. It feels wrong to have this lack of enthusiasm for music. But I am a word girl, and sometime lyrics will stand out powerfully to me. Two Sundays ago, this occurred during church service. Now, I’m remembering the song I heard that Sunday. It’s an old song sung in church since my childhood. Many people make hand motions to go with the song for children. It’s about worshiping Jesus for coming to earth, dying on a cross, and coming back to life. This Sunday, a line stood out to me and is still echoing in my heart. We sang, “I’m so glad you’re in my life” from the song Lord I Lift Your Name on High.

As the words came from my mouth, I wondered if this is true for me right now. I asked myself, “Do I enjoy God?” I desire to honor Him and live for Him. I’m thankful for his peace, protection, and joy. But, do I enjoy Him?

The first question and answer in The Westminster Shorter Catechism addresses this area of enjoying God. The question states: What is the chief end of man? Answer: Man’s chief end is to glorify God and enjoy Him forever.

As I pondered the truth we are designed to enjoy God, I thought of two lines from scripture:

“Worship the Lord with gladness…” Psalm 100:2

“Delight yourself in the Lord…” Psalm 37:4

There are many other scriptures that speak of enjoying God!

So here is a question for you: how do we enjoy God?

I believe we enjoy God differently based on your personality, history, and preferences. God is so vast and creative -there are so many ways He is enjoyed.

Let’s talk about three ways that you can enjoy God to start awakening ideas:

  1. You can enjoy God through relationships with others. If your familiar with the creation story in the Bible, you know that God created people in His image. Each unique person shows a bit of what God is like. Your children, friends, spouse, or parents can give you glimpses in into the humor, playfulness, and creativity of God. You can enjoy God when you enjoy your friend’s fiery personality or the way your Grandma sort of cackles when she laughs.
  2. You can enjoy God through nature. God often uses nature to speak to us and comfort our souls. The majesty and vastness of the created world can cause you to wonder in awe at the One who designed what we see. He created nature so we would enjoy it and in turn enjoy Him.
  3. You can enjoy God through music. I did admit that I’m not a huge music girl. However, there are songs I will sometime put on repeat to calm my mind and draw my focus into God’s nearness. We all know music is powerful and moving. This power can aid us in worshiping and enjoying God.
