Hobbies

To own a hobby is to invite a kind friend along in your life journey. A hobby is different from work where you are driving to achieve or produce and from entertainment where you consume someone else’s work. A hobby/pastime is an opportunity to relax and refocus. It’s purpose is to make you “happy tired.” The feeling you get when you participate in something that uses your brain and body and also refuels your heart and mind.

Don’t we need hobbies more than ever?

Hobbies are for the brave. Most hobbies include the cost of materials or equipment. And, hobbies take time. It’s brave to decide that your hobby is worth the money and time. It’s a bold decision in today’s driven lifestyle to choose to pause for a pastime.

Hobbies are for the creative. Here is a little secret: we are all creative (and I believe each person should choose a hobby). Many hobbies are creative endeavors. It’s important to pick a pastime that makes you feel alive and creative. Then the hobby can fulfil its purpose- refreshing you!

Hobbies are for those who like themselves. To take a break from the drive to produce and the hum of entertainment and participate in a hobby, means you will have time to think, reflect, and pause. You discover yourself in this time. Do you like what you discover?

There are as many unique hobbies as there are cereals in the store’s breakfast aisle. If you have forgotten what joy a hobby can be, you can always browse a list. I have compiled an abbreviated one here for you. As you scan the list, remember what you enjoyed as a child. Or perhaps you will select something you enjoyed in your college days or before having kids. Pastimes don’t need to be traditional. If you decide it’s worth the time, money, and the end result will be a “happy tired” feeling, you have picked the right hobby for you.

Just in case you were wondering, some of my favorite hobbies are running, caring for indoor plants (I love repotting plants and moving them around my home!), planning parties or gatherings in my home, and reading. I also dabble in scrapbooking, journaling, and baking (alas, I would bake more if sugar and white flour were as healthy as they are delicious!).

This week’s photos you might have seen already, but since this week Kassie is talking about hobbies I wanted to share a few of mine! So I will grace you with my horse, dog (of course Dixie is missing but she tends to have other plans and run away), then of course agriculture and our heifers!
